These dino tracks, bones and eggs are just a short turn off of the highway in Tuba City on Navajo land. Native Americans are on hand to take you on a tour for as long as you like. Most of the tracks we saw were from those 2 legged dinos that spit from the 1st Jurassic Park movie (I forgot their name!)and they say the tracks are indeed from the Jurassic period, some 180 million years ago! This place is a MUST SEE if you're passing through Tuba City on the way to the Canyon. Be sure to tip your guide handsomely; this is their job. Our guide Burt said his tribe lived in the distant mountain without electricity or running water, although there is an outside clean water source in the mountains. Very cool guy he sure knew his dinosaurs! Go see it!
Worth a 30 minute detour if you're in the area with kids. Local guides on hand, hoping for $20-$30 tip in exchange for slightly rushed tour and chance to sell you jewellery, though some say it's public land so nothing to stop you walking around without a guide. Some good footprints and coprolytes though! (Also worth coming back to same site after dark for some spectacularly clear stargazing).
Great place. Take a guide her will show you lot of features which you won't be able to find by yourself. Donation to guide is voluntary.
I loved this place, very interesting. Wanda was our guide. Wanda and her husband man this area and give you a tour. A donation is recommended, but not mandatory. We gave them $20 from the 2 of us. They also sell very nice Indian Jewelry there.
Was worth the stop, just be ready for the turnoff. The only sign is right at the turn. Inside the Navajo Nation, there were about 10 Native Americans on site guiding and selling wares (not very good compared to others we saw at roadside pull outs). You will need a Navajo guide who will walk you out to show the tracks (wetting them with water to make them more apparent).
Our guide was named Michael, and he was very knowledgeable, sharing information we knew to be true as well as a lot of stuff we never heard before. We confirmed the information later out of interest in learning more. The guides walk you out (the closest tracks are within 20' of the parking lot), point out the tracks, eggs, scat and some geologic interests for a "donation". We gave Michael $8 for about 20 minutes of seeing, talking and learning. Well worth it!
